ABC Islands
The economy of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) has experienced stable growth in recent years, partly due to favorable tax regulations and limited government intervention. These Caribbean islands are globally renowned for their stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich cultural heritage. While tourism remains the primary source of income, financial services, trade, and transport also significantly contribute to the gross domestic product (GDP). This diversification makes the islands less dependent on external factors and helps maintain a solid economic foundation.
The economy of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) has been rapidly developing in recent years, particularly in the areas of tourism, financial services, ICT, and their role as a logistical hub for air and freight traffic within the Caribbean. As part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, these islands benefit from a fast-growing tourism industry, driven by the expansion of international flight connections and a steady influx of cruise ships.
In 2007, the ABC Islands collectively welcomed over 1.8 million tourists. By 2010, this number had risen to 2.1 million, and in 2011, it surpassed 2.3 million visitors. Ten years later, in 2018, the total had exceeded 3 million, firmly establishing the islands as one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean.
Aruba’s main airport, Queen Beatrix International Airport, has experienced significant passenger growth in recent years. In 2005, the airport handled over 1.5 million passengers, a figure that had grown to more than 2.5 million by 2018. Similarly, Hato International Airport on Curaçao and Flamingo International Airport on Bonaire have followed this upward trend, further cementing the ABC Islands as an increasingly important hub in the Caribbean.
The combination of a pleasant climate, stunning beaches, a diverse range of accommodations, and a rich culinary and cultural heritage has made the ABC Islands a true “must-see” destination for travelers from around the globe.
